Cragfont is Over 200 Years Old

Cragfont (Castalian Springs, Tennessee) is a lasting example of an early Georgian Grey Stone. Construction began in 1798 and was completed by 1802. It was built by General James Winchester who was a frontiersman and pioneer in the state of Tennessee. He fought in both the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. He served as the first Speaker of the Tennessee Senate and was one of the founders of the city of Memphis.โฃ

Named Cragfont because it sits atop a very rocky bluff with a spring at its base. Inside, there is a 3rd story ballroom and an authentic weaving room in the basement. Many of the windows have 24 panes which I thought was impressive! And unique to this home is a two-story smokehouse attached at the back.โฃ

Winchester died at the home in 1826 and is buried in a family plot behind the house. I attempted to visit his grave, but was attacked by Kamikaze bumble bees so I promptly left. Maybe next time? This is now a museum so go visit if you’re ever in Sumner county!
