Ashantilly Home Made of Tabby

Who knows what tabby is?! Well, I’m going to tell you. Tabby is a type of concrete made from oyster shells, sand, and water. On the Georgia coast, it’s a common building material with easy access to those things. This beautiful home that you’re looking at is Ashantilly, built of tabby. In fact, it’s also known as “Old Tabby”. It was constructed in 1820 by Thomas Spalding and took 2-3 years to complete. It was named Ashantilly after the Ashantully Castle in Scotland which was an ancestral home of Spalding’s. It’s a colonial revival home, but you’d think it was more federal style since the columns were removed in 1870. My aunt has attended historical meetings here and she says it’s beautiful inside!
