Bacon’s Castle in Surry County, Virginia is the oldest documented brick dwelling in the United States! It’s an extremely rare example of Jacobean architecture in the New World. Built in 1665 for Arthur Allen, he didn’t live much longer after its completion and left it to his son. It’s named “Bacon’s Castle” because it was occupied as a fort by Nathanial Bacon’s men during Bacon’s Rebellion in 1676. It’s now a museum that you can visit a short ferry ride and drive from Jamestown.
