The Mast General Store in tiny Valle Crucis, North Carolina began in 1883 as the Taylor General Store. Henry Taylor soon sold an interest in his store to William Wellington Mast and it became known as The Taylor and Mast General Store. Eventually William bought the whole store and it was from then all called The Mast General Store.
The store was known for having everything you could possibly need. From plow points to cloth and cradles to caskets. This led to their popular saying, “if you can’t buy it here, you don’t need it”.
The place largely looks a lot like what it did many years ago. There’s still a working post office inside and barrels of penny candy for sale. When I say Valle Crucis is tiny, I mean 226 citizens tiny.
