1849 Home in Mandeville, LA

The Theodule Verret House was built in 1849. Verret was mayor and a civic leader during Mandeville’s earliest days. Located right across the street from Lake Pontchartrain, it was built 12 feet high and far from the street for year-round living. Gas heating and lighting were installed while the Verret family lived here and the gas fireplaces still remain today.

Mandeville got its name from a village in Normandy, France. It means “big farm” in medieval Norman French. The city was founded in 1834 by Bernard Xavier de Marigny de Mandeville. Most homes here on the lakefront were built as summer retreats which makes today’s feature unique as it was made for living year-round.
