Historic Salt House, Jonesborough

This historic building in Jonesborough, Tennessee is known as the Salt House. It was constructed in the 1840s and was a general store and wholesale warehouse ran by businessman William Crouch. During the Civil War, it became very difficult to get salt to preserve food and they had to cross enemy lines to acquire it. They would then transport it by train and bring loads to this building. This is when it became known as The Salt House.

This is now the Tennessee Hills Distillery and they use the building for their making process. Visitors have the opportunity to witness every aspect of the liquor making process such as mashing/fermenting to the final distillation in their hand-made copper stills that were built by the fellas at Tennessee Hills Distillery, as well as the bottling and packaging processes.
