The Sexton’s House in Russellville

This is the Sexton House in Russellville, Kentucky. It was built in 1870 by Owen Mosley. Owen was a sexton for the Maple Grove Cemetery. A “sexton” is an old term that means caretaker of a cemetery and thus, this house is the sexton’s house. The house sits on the cemetery property.

Notice the painted over window in the tower. There is a story that it was once the room of a girl that lived here. She was getting ready for a dance when her father forbid her from going to the dance because of a very bad storm. Lightening struck and her face was etched into the glass and she died right then. People would come from all over to see the face in the window. So much so that in 1920, the window was painted over so people would stop coming.

It’s also said that the face etching began to come through the painted over glass, so they finally boarded up the window as well. You never know if this is just a legend or if it actually happened, but it’s an interesting story anyways!
