John McKenzie House, Bowling Green

No need to adjust the color on your screen. This house really is that red! This bright brick home in Bowling Green was built in 1890 by James McKenzie.

James McKenzie was known for several things in his life including his profession as a lawyer and eventually in agriculture. He served as a private during the Civil War in the Confederate States Army. After the war, he was elected into the Kentucky House of Representatives and was eventually elected to the US House of Representatives. He was also appointed Minister to Peru under President Grover Cleveland in 1893.

His home is quite the eclectic mix of architectures. It’s a bit Italianate, Queen Anne, and Greek Revival all rolled into one. Somehow it totally works, too!
