New Market, Tennessee is a tiny little town over in East Tennessee. With a population of about 1300, it’s known for several things. One is the distinction of being the birth place of Francis Hodgson Burnett, author of The Secret Garden and other children’s classics. She began publishing many of these when she was a teenager living here in New Market.
Another thing that makes New Market noteable, but for a more tragic reason, was a passenger train collision in 1904. Two Southern Railway trains collided in New Market going full speed and killed at least 56 and injuring 106.
There are also many historic buildings in New Market including this beautiful church! This is the New Market Presbyterian Church. It was organized in 1826. An original building was erected on this site in 1826, but the congregation soon outgrew it. A new one was built in 1865 and was named in the church records as “especially distinguished by its tall belfry and spire being 150 feet high”.
In 1885, the building was falling into disrepair and this one was built. It’s one of a few surviving rural brick churches in the Gothic Revival style in East Tennessee.
Can you believe those red arched windows?!
