Winchester, Tennessee History

Winchester, Tennessee. It’s a fairly small town with close to 9,000 people who call themselves Winchestertons. I just made that up, but maybe they do really call themselves that! It’s the county seat of Franklin County. It was established in 1809 and laid out into lots the very next year. It was named for General James Winchester, who was a Revolutionary War soldier and also served in the War of 1812. He later served in several areas of Tennessee state leadership including the General Assembly and the state Senate. He is also noted as one of the founders of Memphis along with Andrew Jackson and John Overton. Interestingly enough, from what I could find, James Winchester never lived in Winchester. It was just named in his honor. โฃ

Four governors of Tennessee have been born in Winchester and for all your Vols fans, Phil Fulmer was also born here. The beloved singer and actress, Dinah Shore also called this town home.โฃ

Winchester might be most-known for Tims Ford Lake. In fact, the town is surrounded on three sides by this lake! A 10,800 acre reservoir created by TVA when they constructed a dam on the Elk River, completed in 1970. Quick story, my husband and I once rented a small jon boat on this lake and drove it all around thinking it would be so fun. It was until we almost capsized multiple times due to the large boats that would fly by and create huge waves. Fun times.โฃ
