What is a Shotgun House?

Shotgun houses are quite common in New Orleans, but you can also find them in other southern states. They are characteristically long and narrow, and are generally a single room wide and a few rooms deep. Folklore says they got the name shotgun from the idea that a bullet could travel all the way through the house if you open the front and back doors.

This old shotgun house, in Butchertown, was built in 1891. It lies in a row with several others that have been revitalized over the years!
