Oldest House in Benton, TN

Happy Thanksgiving, y’all! I am thankful for all of you who geek out with me about all these pretty old places! From the bottom of my heart, know that I appreciate each and every one of you.

I was recently passing through a small Tennessee town called Benton over in East Tennessee. I passed this building called The Drug Store, but I just knew it had to be an old house gone commercial.

Turns out that this is the oldest home in the town, built in 1840!

Lot number 115 was purchased by William Wiggins in 1840 for $205. He then built this home. It’s a hall and parlor which makes it unique because those are typically not constructed out of brick. William Wiggins was one of Polk County’s first Justices of the Peace.

It’s been “The Drug Store” since 1973 and has been on the National Register since 1993.
