Can you believe the beautiful pink color?! I’d expect nothing less from a Charleston, South Carolina building.
This is the Huguenot Church. Huguenot is another word for the French Protestant movement. The original church on this site was built in 1687. Almost 110 years later, that building was blown up to prevent the spread of fire that was engulfing much of the surrounding area. A new building was constructed in 1800, but was closed by 1823. It was torn down in 1844 and the building that you see here was built in 1845.
This was the first Gothic Revival building ever built in Charleston. It’s noted by the National Register of Historic Places as one of Charleston’s most exceptional structures.
