The Carrington-Carr House

A storybook Queen Anne in Charleston! This is one of the “newer” homes there having been built in 1890. It was built on the site of another home that was destroyed in the earthquake of 1886.

Waring P. Carrington, a jeweler, bought the lot in 1889. His wife, Martha Williams was daughter to George W. Williams, who was a wealthy banker who lived in the Calhoun Mansion on Meeting Street. The story goes that George presented his daughter and new husband with a $75,000 check pinned to a rose-colored pillow as a wedding gift to build their new home.

To celebrate their fifth anniversary, Carrington bought two Tiffany windows in 1895. They’re now in the first-floor parlor.

This was the 2 Meeting Street Inn, a Bed and Breakfast for many years. It’s now temporarily closed as it was purchased by a new company recently and they plan to renovate before opening again.
