Samuel Culbertson House

Talk about a mansion! The Samuel Culbertson House, in New Albany, Indiana, was built in 1886. It was a wedding gift to Samuel and his new bride from his father, William Culbertson. Samuel was president of the First National Bank. He was later president of the Churchill Downs racetrack.

The home was later owned by John Hazelwood and he ran his eye clinic out of the home. It was known as The Hazelwood Eye Infirmary. I was so glad to find this old postcard of it via the Indiana Album!

In 1939, a men’s fraternal organization called the Manzanita Tribe Number 276, Improved Order of Red Men, purchased the home and operated out of it until they moved to a new location in 2004. During their time there, they built a Quonset-hut-shaped addition on the backside.

It was renovated and is an event venue known as Mansion 1886.

You can read about Samuel’s father’s house (also located on Mansion Row) here.
