J. R. Smith House in Georgetown

It took me a minute, but I eventually picked my jaw up off the ground. This house is the J. R. Smith home in Georgetown, South Carolina. It was built in 1878 and has also been known as the Mark Moses house. It has the city’s only remaining cupola or “widow’s watch” and it briefly served as a Jewish school. I found this old postcard from sometime around 1911 of the home.

Postcard found here.

It looks a little rough around the edges, but you’ll be glad to know that it was sold last year and at the time I took this picture, it was being restored! I will definitely need to make my way back down there to see its progress. โœจ
