Historic Bear Creek Church

While I do adore my little white churches, this brick church had me almost squealing when we pulled up! How gorgeous is this place? It sits alone in a big field surrounded by big beautiful trees. Oh what those trees have seen!

This is Bear Creek Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Maury County. The Bear Creek Church was established in 1814 by the Rev Samuel King. Camp meetings were held on the property from 1814 to 1860. During this time, two other church structures were built with the first being made of logs. In the 1890s, a committee head up by John A. Coffee oversaw the building of the final structure and it was dedicated in 1898. The clay was dug from nearby and the bricks fired on the spot. Regular services were held here until 1932, at the end of Reverend A.C. Stribling’s ministry. Most recently, I saw they had a couple of open house nights in 2019. Maybe they will do one again after the virus is over!

One of the most prominent features is the 1 and 1/2 story bell tower, but I can’t stop looking at those beautiful gothic-style windows.
