Marymont Mansion in Sad Decay

An iconic place in Murfreesboro is the beautiful Marymont Mansion. I couldn’t go too long without featuring this one. The mansion was built in 1861 by Hiram Jenkins on land that had been in his family since the 1790s. He adorned the walls with goldleaf papering brought in from France. He furnished it with pieces from France and Holland. Almost as soon as it was finished, the war had begun. It served as a headquarters for a Federal Regiment during the Civil War and shortly after became the home of Hiram’s niece and Dr. J. J. Rucker who was a practicing physician in the county. The Ruckers were the one to add the four iconic columns to the front facade. Dr Rucker and his wife had a baby girl in 1891 and they named her Mary. The home was called “Marymont” in her honor. She became the owner after the death of her parents. When she passed away, the home was aquired and used for several different things including a real estate office and wedding venue. The latest that I have heard is that money is being raised to turn the property into an upscale wine bar. Holding a place on the National Register of Historic Places since 1973, I pray that this one is saved and preserved for years to come!
