This house has got the green goin’ on over in Jonesborough, Tennessee. It was built in the late 1860s and features a mix of both Italianate and Queen Anne influences. I’m a fan of that unique octagonal porch!
I found a fascinating newspaper article from this past fall in the Herald & Tribune that talks about how porches may have been beneficial during spreading illnesses. Here’s what that said:
“Social and medical developments of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries greatly influenced residential architecture, with โcure porchesโ representing homeownersโ efforts to live a hygienic lifestyle. The absence of zoning laws or building codes permitted individuals and families to create rehabilitative spaces at home, where tuberculosis patients could recover from a vicious and often fatal disease. Today, there are several examples of anti-tubercular porches in historic Jonesborough at 130, 311, and 314 West Main Street.”
