This house still seems to gush with life long after its people have gone. What’s left behind tells its story.
They bought this house on the steps of the courthouse at an auction in 1939, though it was built much earlier. The family that lived here were busy folks. Caring for a large farm and what appears to be a fairly big house.
The man of the house wore many hats. He was a preacher, which you may have picked up on by all the books. A marriage certificate was left behind from a wedding that the reverend performed there at his home. There are lots of hymnals, study books, and even sermon notes scattered throughout.
He was a merchant with a store in town and along with those hymnals I found catalogs and receipts. People said that it was like a Walmart in the 50s and 60s and you could find anything you needed there.
With a big farmhouse on a big patch of land, he also farmed cattle and had a dairy route delivering milk door to door.
The beds are still made and the iron still sitting on the ironing board. The couple only had one child, a daughter. I found some evidence that she helped out with church events. She was married right here at their home. They certainly seemed like a close-knit family.
