It’s a private home now, but once upon a time, this pretty old place was part of a hotel complex. It was built in 1880 and along with the house next door (still standing), it was known as the Bittersohn Inn.
The Inn was located in close proximity to the railroad and it’s thought that it may have served travelers or perhaps railroad employees on the Charleston to Hamburg line.
See the stars in the porch trim? The house next door has this same trim. It’s said to be a distinctive mark of the builder.
This picture was published in 1893 as an advertisement for the inn. Thank you so much to Visit Summerville for letting me share this amazing historic picture!
